North Walsham 1 2 v Dereham 3 0

Following a fortnight lost to winter weather North Walsham welcomed back several players unavailable for the previous away defeat to Sudbury but missed captain Greene, as struggling Dereham visited Cromer on a cold, wet day.  Despite playing into the prevailing weather North Walsham had the better of the opening period and soon moved into a two goal lead with Nickerson following up a short corner strike and shortly afterwards exerting pressure to win a 50:50 ball in the midfield to set up Cox, assisted by an excellent leave from James Lunn for a finely dispatched second.  North Walsham lost West to a calf injury during the first half and struggled to exert the same level of control on the game after the first quarter.

The two sides enjoyed an equal share of possession in the first half but Dereham’s more direct style struggled to create clear chances against North Walsham with the returning Barker-Wood and Andrew Lunn working hard to break up Dereham attacks from the midfield and protect the defence.  North Walsham’s best chances came with carefully constructed passing moves but as the half progressed they increasing resorted to a long ball game that asked fewer questions of the Dereham defence.

After the half time break the game became scrappy and although played in good spirit, five yellow cards were given and several greens as the umpires exerted their authority.  Inevitable the contest became more open and both sides created chances but were unable to add to the goal tally.  In the North Walsham goal Bartram produced a couple of fine saves and Younger and Spencer both blocked good shooting opportunities for Dereham.

North Walsham were pleased to return to winning ways after the enforced break as they now face back to back games against the top two.

Sudbury 2 – 4 North Walsham 1 – 2

North Walsham 1 suffered a rare defeat in a thus far successful season, to a Sudbury side battling in the lower reaches of the league.  North Walsham were weakened by the unavailability of a number of key players but were boosted by the return of Dale in defence following a broken wrist sustained in a game before Christmas. Armstrong made a rare appearance for the first team in returning to the scene of his previous season’s goal scoring triumph.

Neither side started the game with any fluency and passing moves were rare.  North Walsham created a couple of half chances as the Sudbury defence looked shaky in their own area and struggled to deal with the lofted ball from Spencer. However the home side extracted full reward from the best move of the opening period as their young left winger sprinted through a leaden footed North Walsham defence to finish clinically with a first time strike that left Bartram with no chance in the North Walsham goal.

Sudbury’s goal proved a short term wake up call to North Walsham who created more sustained pressure matched by occasional incursions from Sudbury into the visitors half.  This pressure was rewarded with goals from the reliable West and a rare strike from Lunn, who opened his account for the season following up his own strike to finish with a rebounded effort.  As North Walsham’s bare eleven looked towards half time and Amey’s movement was severely constraint by the recurrence of an injury suffered in an earlier game, Sudbury drew level with a shot through the legs of Bartram.  Spencer, West and captain Green attempted to provide drive and inspiration during the half time team talk but after the restart North Walsham continued to lack conviction in their play.

Sudbury surged through the midfield and were rewarded with two goals, the first a disappointing short corner strike and a disputed second after a goal line melee that ended with a Sudbury stick striking the defending Younger in the throat as the ball crossed the line.  Despite valid protests from Walsham and a long discussion between the umpires the goal was ultimately awarded.

In the period following the restart Cox was fortunate to escape with only a green card after controlling the ball with a high stick and showing dissent to the umpire in the aftermath.  Shortly afterwards there were protests from Sudbury as their defender was yellow carded for a more blatant high stick in stopping a ball on the edge of their area.  As ten man Sudbury defended deeper North Walsham looked to attack a find the goal that would bring them back into the game.  Green went close with a fine run and cross shot from the angle that thudded against the post before rebounding away from the goal.  West drew a spectacular save from the Sudbury keeper that was enjoyed by the watching Sudbury crowd.  As the clock ticked down North Walsham continued to apply pressure and felt they had a good shout for a penalty flick as West appeared to be wrestled back by the defender as he attempted to reach a ball that had rebounded a short distance from the Sudbury keeper.  The exertions of the game told on North Walsham as Sudbury were restored to eleven and ran the clock down to record a welcome victory.  The hard running Nickerson in midfield had a fine performance for Walsham and appears rejuvenated following his antipodean adventure, while Armstrong once again stepped up effectively when asked to assist on a long away trip.

Harleston L5 1 North Walsham L2 1

North Walsham travelled to Harleston knowing that this would be a tough fixture against a well oiled club. The defence worked tirelessly in the first half, with Harleston having the best opportunities. With what seemed endless short corners, the visitors managed to hold the score at 0-0 until half term.

North Walsham started the second half strongly and were awarded a short corner after only 2 minutes. For the second successive week, Denise O’Callaghan converted with a cracking strike. From this point, Harleston pressed hard with every attack and had several shots on goal. After 10 minutes, Harleston brought a great save from keeper Louise Potter, and whilst she was committed to the save, the attack shot high but it was Bobby Pye who made an even more spectacular save with her stick.

Unfortunately, with only 20 minutes of the match remaining, Alice Clohisey took a dreadful bang on her knee and had to be carried off. North Walsham found themselves on the back foot, especially when a defender stopped the ball on the goal line with a foot giving away a penalty stroke – however, Lou Potter made a great save. Things went from bad to worse, when team captain Denise Wait, fell and twisted an already injured knee. The visitors had to change the shape of their team and found themselves defending more and more. There were only 3 minutes of the game remaining when Harleston managed to equalise to bring the final score to 1-1

Team from:

Louise Potter, Bobbie Pye, Alice Clohisey, Ayla Spells, Helen Wicks, Denise O’Callaghan, Shauna Ellis, Jen Marshall, Denise Wait, Hayley Massingham , Hannah Wait, Karenza Moffet, Gabbie Lewis and Alex Whitting
